On the far right of the Word 2016 Insert tab dwells the Symbols group. Two items are found in that group: Equation and Symbol. (If the window is too narrow, you see the Symbols button, from which you can choose Equation or Symbol.) Click the Symbol button see some popular or recently used symbols. Choose a symbol from the menu to insert the special symbol directly into your text.

To see a hoard of symbols and characters, click the Symbol button and choose the More Symbols command. The Symbol dialog box appears, as shown. Choose a decorative font, such as Wingdings, from the Font menu to see strange and unusual characters. To see the gamut of what’s possible with normal text, choose (normal text) from the Font drop-down list. Use the Subset drop-down list to see specific symbols and such.

To stick a character into your document from the Symbol dialog box, select the symbol and click the Insert button.

You need to click the Cancel button when you’re done using the Symbol dialog box.

  • Click the Insert button once for each symbol you want to insert. For example, when you’re putting three sigma symbols into your document, you must locate that symbol on the grid and then click the Insert button three times.

  • Some symbols have shortcut keys. They appear at the bottom of the Symbol dialog box. For example, the shortcut for the degree symbol is Ctrl+@, spacebar — press Ctrl+@ (actually, Ctrl+Shift+2) and then type a space.

  • You can insert symbols by typing the symbol’s character code and then pressing the Alt+X key combination. For example, the character code for sigma is 2211: Type 2211 in your document and then press Alt+X. The number 2211 is magically transformed into the following character:

MathType is a mature product that has been around for 25 years, and we continually add new features. Also, upgrading to the latest version of MathType ensures maximum compatibility with applications you use with MathType and with your computer's system software. If you already use MathType, it is important that you upgrade to the latest version in order to take advantage of these enhancements.

MathType 6.7 New Features:

Virtually all MathType features are enhanced in each major release. Here are some major new features in MathType 6.7. To learn more about these features, visit our Full Feature List.

  • macOS High Sierra (Version 10.13) Support: MathType now supports Mac OS X Tiger (10.4.9) or later, including macOS High Sierra (version 10.13).
  • Apple iWork Support: Apple has picked MathType as its equation editor. If MathType is installed, a MathType Equation item appears on the Insert menu in all three iWork applications: Pages, Keynote, and Numbers, including the versions released in October 2013 and updated in September 2016.
  • Microsoft Office 2011 Support: MathType brings back its full functionality, including equation numbering, within Word 2011. MathType is also compatible with Office 2008 but not all features are available. Please see So what's the story with MathType and Microsoft Office 2008? for details.   • Type TeX/LaTeX directly into a Microsoft Word document: If you already know the TeX typesetting language, you can enter equations quickly using that language in either the MathType editing window or directly into a Word document using the new TeX Toggle command.
  • Copy spreadsheet cells and word processing tables into MathType as matrices: MathType lets you copy and paste a range of cells in Excel or Numbers, or a table in Word or Pages, and paste it into the equation you are working on as a matrix. This saves you time by avoiding typing and mistakes due to missing decimal points or dropped digits.
  • Compatibility with 800+ applications and websites:Google Presentations, Desire2Learn, Stack Exchange, and 114+ other applications and websites join Microsoft Office, Apple Pages, Keynote, NumbersAdobe InDesign, and hundreds of others that work with MathType! MathType 6.0 New Features:

Virtually all MathType features are enhanced in each major release. Here are some major new features in MathType 6.0.

  • Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Support: MathType now supports Mac OS X versions 10.3.9 or newer, including version 10.6.3 also known as Snow Leopard.
  • Intel Mac Support: MathType is now a Universal application (also known as a Universal Binary) which means that it runs fast on both Intel and PowerPC Macs.
  • Apple iWork '09 Support: Apple has picked MathType as its equation editor. If MathType is installed, a MathType Equation item appears on the Insert menu in all three iWork applications: Pages, Keynote, and Numbers.
  • Microsoft Office 2008 Support: MathType is compatible with Office 2008 but not all features are available. Please see our Full Feature List for details.
  • Define Equations using TeX/LaTeX: If you already know the TeX typesetting language, you can enter equations quickly using MathType's TeX input mode. TeX editing can be mixed with point-and-click editing so you get the best of both worlds. You can also copy equations from existing TeX documents.
  • Copy and Author Equations from Wikipedia: Wikipedia, the popular online encyclopedia, contains 1000s of pages with mathematical equations. Once you do your research on Wikipedia, you can copy relevant equations for use in your own work. You can also copy MathType equations into Wikipedia's page editor in order to create new pages or edit existing ones.
  • Equation Browsing: The new equation browsing feature allows you to visit every equation and/or equation number and reference in your Word document or PowerPoint presentation.
  • MathML Clipboard Support: MathType can now copy equations to the Windows clipboard using the new MathML Clipboard Format that is supported by a growing number of mathematical and scientific applications.
  • New, Improved Online Help: We have combined MathType's user manual and help into a single comprehensive help system, featuring full text search and an extensive index, and works with Apple Help. It contains tutorials that teach you how to use MathType most efficiently as well as contextual help for its commands and dialogs.

MathType 6.0 equations are compatible with MathType 5 equations so you can continue to work with others even if they haven't upgraded yet. MathType 6 will also retain any changes you've made in your current version of MathType to keyboard shortcuts, toolbars, preferences, etc.
